Helpful Tips
- Upload and securely store unlimited photos, while only paying for prints or ordered products.
- Low-resolution photos won't print well at standard sizes.
Accepted File Formats
Photo File Formats
- Shutterfly currently only accepts the following file formats:
- JPG, JPEG, PNG, BMP, HEIC, and HEIF
- HEIC and HEIF files are accepted only via the iOS app, website, and mobile web, where they are converted to JPG at upload.
- These formats aren't accepted via the Android app.
- Shutterfly is unable to accept: .tif or .tiff, .gif, .psd, .pdf, and other file types.
- When adjusting photos with photo editing software (such as Adobe Photoshop), minimize compression for best results.
- Follow these guidelines:
- Color space is RGB format (not CMYK)
- 8-bit color
- Save files in Baseline Standard JPEG format, as Progressive Scan files may encounter upload issues.
- Most photo editing programs include a "Save As" option to create copies and convert files to accepted formats.
- Shutterfly doesn't offer a service to convert files into other formats.
- All accepted file types are converted and stored as .JPG files in the Shutterfly account, resulting in the loss of transparency for files with transparent backgrounds.
- The following screenshot is an example of a file type with transparency (left) and then how it appears once uploaded to a Shutterfly account without transparency.

Video File Formats
Shutterfly accept the following video formats:
- FLV, MPEG, DV, MTS, WMV, M4V, MPG, ASF, M2TS, MP4, MOV, AVI, 3GPP, MP2, QT, MOVIE, and 3GP.
- The file size limit for videos is 2GB.

Photos on Facebook are resized for storage, which may result in insufficient resolution for larger Shutterfly templates.
- Shutterfly offers layouts tailored to these resolutions, but using original, high-resolution photos is recommended whenever possible.
Using Shutterfly Without a Digital Camera
- Scanned prints should be saved as JPEGs at 300 dpi or higher, with JPED quality at 80 or better.
- Shutterfly doesn't support 35mm film or other film development services.
- Digital images shared by friends should be high-resolution, preferably from a camera or scanner.
- Large white borders from scanned images should be cropped before uploading.
Uploading Tips
- The Shutterfly mobile app allows direct import of photos and videos from the camera roll.
- Photos are stored in the cloud and sync across devices when logged into the account.
- Photos and videos can be imported to a computer via USB before uploading to Shutterfly.
- The 'Stop' button in the notification pop-up can cancel manual uploads.

- Manual uploads from the mobile app can be canceled.
- Uploads interrupted on the web must be restarted.
- Duplicate photos are automatically removed; duplicate videos are not detected.
- 'Images are temporarily unavailable' is a temporary issue and should be resolved within hours to days.
Recommended Photo Resolution
- A minimum of 3 megapixels is recommended for standard prints.
- Higher resolution is suggested for large-format products such as a Canvas or Poster.
- More than 10 megapixels are generally unnecessary.
- Older cameras or low-resolution settings should still meet the 3-megapixel minimum.
