Back of Print Messaging & Captions
Helpful Tips
- A caption can include up to 999 characters.
- Captions will transfer to the Back of Print Messaging when prints are ordered.
- The back of print messaging is limited to 30 characters, so only the first 30 characters of the caption will be printed.
- Special characters may be included, but certain special characters are unable to be printed on the Back of Print Messaging.
- If no caption is provided, the Back of Print Messaging will default to the filename and the date taken.
- If the date taken is unavailable, the file name and date uploaded will be displayed.
Adding Captions to Photos
- Sign in to Shutterfly and Click 'Photos' at the top of the Shutterfly homepage.
- Double-click a photo to enlarge it.
- Click 'Add' under Caption in the information panel on the right.

- Type the caption and Click 'Save.'
- Captions won't appear in the timeline or in an album.
- Currently, captions are not included when sharing via email or sharing an album.
Passport Photos
- Uploading, cropping, and printing a photo to meet basic passport size requirements is technically possible.
- Government agencies enforce strict specifications for passport photos, including background, lighting, and facial positioning.
- To ensure compliance with official standards, Shutterfly recommends using a professional passport photo service or visiting an authorized facility.
- This approach helps avoid delays or rejections due to non-compliant photo submissions.
Troubleshooting Tips
Avoid ordering unwanted Prints with the following tips:
- Use Shutterfly's navigation buttons instead of the browser’s back button.
- Returning to the album via the browser's back button may display previously selected photos as still selected, potentially adding duplicates to the order.
- Items remain in the shopping cart until ordered or removed.
- Shutterfly’s saved cart feature allows items to stay in the cart until ready to order.
- To remove unwanted Prints, set the order quantity to zero or click the trash bin icon on the Select Sizes and Quantities page.
- Any enhancements applied before adding photos to the cart will remain.
- If an enhanced photo is in the cart and further edits are made, remove the existing version to avoid duplicates.
- The same photo can be printed without making a copy first.
- To print multiple versions of the same photo, enhance the image, add it to the cart, apply further enhancements, and add it again.
- Use the "Preview" link in the shopping cart to see all prints in the order.
- Select the “Change size/quantity” link to access the Select Sizes and Quantities page for removing unwanted prints or adjusting quantities.
- Dark Prints
- If prints appear dark, the original photo may have been underexposed, as digital cameras often require ample light for properly exposed photos.
- For best results:
- Use a flash regularly, especially for subjects in low light or backlit conditions.
- Preview photos carefully before ordering. If an image appears dark onscreen, it will likely print dark as well.
- Brightness levels may be adjustable in photo editing software, such as Adobe Photoshop Elements, before uploading.
